Choosing the carpet to place in the living room or bedroom is one of the most frequent doubts when it comes to furnishing the house in its final touches.
In fact, there are a myriad of materials, colors, shapes, and compositions.
Choose the carpet
Before seeing some design pieces in detail, it is necessary to make a couple of small premises.
Carpet – yes, or no?
The carpet is a complement that furnishes a lot. Not all homes need a carpet and not all carpets can be placed everywhere. Today it is possible to choose between different shapes and sizes, creating even very special combinations that greatly enhance the living room, bathroom and bedroom.
Which carpet to choose?
A carpet is a fairly expensive piece of furniture. Many are laboriously hand-knotted to allow for a great deal of detail and a soft finish. We advise you to choose the quality, being difficult to machine wash, so it could accumulate a lot of dust and dirt over the years. Materials of dubious strength / origin will create significantly less hygienic environments.
Choose a short-haired model if you want something more practical and manageable directly with the vacuum cleaner.
How big should the carpet be?
Even the carpet can be sized and proportioned to the furniture. Indeed, it must!
Depending on the size of the sofa, it is a good idea to choose one of these layouts shown in the figure, with a different size. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that at least 2 of the 4 sofa legs rest on the carpet, in order to cover the foot band of the seated person.
How to place the carpet in front of the sofa?
In the case of a carpet for the bedroom, here too you can choose between different sizes. The important thing is that the area on which you rest your feet is covered once you get out of bed.
How to place the carpet in the bedroom?
Choose the carpet, remember not to lay the carpets near the doors so as not to obstruct the passage too much and always size them in proportion to the room. Any table must be placed on top. If there is more than one coffee table, at least one of them must be on top of the carpet.
They are definitely the decors that last the longest in terms of time and overall style.
A little more inflated today are the Persian carpets, already seen and full of colors, such as to create a certain chromatic confusion, especially when it comes to carpets in shades of red, burgundy or orange.
Let’s say that it would be better to use them with colder and duller colors (gray, blue, …) or with classical furnishings.
The choice of carpet depends a lot on the room it is placed in and the overall look of the room. A rug that you will have to put in the bathroom will not be the same size or the same design as one in the dining room.
The new proposals of the brands are mostly geometric or a little eccentric.
Here, the carpet can furnish or simply complete a look: you decide how much it should be the protagonist in the room.
Indoor rugs can be considered as real works of art. If they are not plain colored pieces, they should be chosen in the same way as a painting. Indeed, sometimes rugs can really replace paintings and can be fixed to the walls, vertically. Or even on the stairs, creating an exceptional effect.
These are very evidently decorative pieces, which create environments with a strong aesthetic impact. Before choosing the carpet, we always recommend investing in a certain design: the carpet is a piece of furniture that needs dedicated styling because it must communicate effectively with the floor, the sofa and the rest of the environment.
Another viable idea is to insert several rugs close together. You can choose between different shapes or use the same shape, for example two circles or a circle and another, irregular, shape.
It goes without saying that the two rugs together should communicate: it could be the same rug of different sizes, or two rugs with similar palettes, or even the same rug with complementary colors.
How to match the carpet to the furniture
Do you want to choose the carpet without making a mistake?
There are several strategies to insert the right carpet into the environment. Let’s see some of them:
Palette carpet
If you want to create a soft environment, look for a rug that matches the same tones as the room. Possibly in plain color or slightly decorated, in order to create a simple and relaxing tone.
Poliform carpet
Generally, it is good to create a certain gap between the floor and the sofa, which you can facilitate with a nice rug. For example, if the floor is medium parquet and the sofa is gray, you can choose an ecru-colored rug to create the right contrast between the two elements.
Scenic carpet
The carpet can also be disruptive and intentionally grab attention. Look for a beautiful and refined motif, with a color outside the palette chosen for the home, in such a way as to make that portion of the room the protagonist as if it were a point underlined with a highlighter.
It must be a thoughtful choice, never casual. The house will take on a more eclectic attitude which can break the monotony. If you have, for example, a gray floor and a gray sofa, a colored rug is a good opportunity to break the monotony and make the space more interesting.
